 Lao

 

The population of Laos is about 5,433,000 and the population density is about 23 people per km2, comprised with more than 47 main ethnic groups such as: the Hmong, Khrmu, Yao, Akha, Ikor, Leu, and etc. These ethic groups still retain their own distinctive customs, dialects, and traditions. In fact, Laos's population is classified into three main groups:

- Lao Lum "Lao lowland that lives mostly in the plain next to the Mekong River and its subsidiaries," 50-60%

- Lao Theung "Lao upland that lives mostly in the plateau," 20-30%

- Lao Soung "Lao highland that lives generally on the top of the mountains," 10-20%

 

In general, the Lao Loum lives in the Mekong River Valley survive on wet-rice cultivation, and practices Theravada Buddhism. The Lao Theung live in a mid-altitude mountain slopes and has the lowest standard of live amount the three groups. And the Lao Soung who favorites the high altitude with tradition of cultivation the dry rice "slit and burn," and opium.

 

Chinese, Vietnamese and European expatriate communities also present. Chinese and Vietnamese dominated the business in the urban while European expatriate community is become increasing and mostly makeup of temporary residents working for international aid organizations
