What to Eat & Tipping

In the main city of Laos, you can easily find: French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese restaurants and others. When traveling in the provinces, local food as charcoal chicken, sticky rice, fried fish, “lab” and etc…are usually served in the restaurants. Lao food is not as hot or spicy as Thai and it can be cooked at your request when you order. The most popular fast food in Lao is the Chinese food or “pho.”

Tipping is not common in Laos and only at a few upmarket restaurants and hotels where you might want to leave some tips. For tour guide and other services, we do recommend you to tip if you feel that the services met you satisfaction. Taxi and tuk-tuk drivers certainly do not expect to be tipped unless it is unusual and difficult than originally expected.
