Travelers are strictly required to make exchange at licensed exchanged shops or banks while paying for services and goods in Lao PDR. While credit cards and traveler's cheques are only accepted in major city and mostly in the upmarket restaurants, hotels and shops with a service charge of anywhere from 3.5-5%.  Cash advance is also available at the banks on Mastercard, Visa card or American Express with a service charge of 3-5% depending on the transaction whether it is in kip or US dollar which apply differently.
