 Climate & What to Wear

Laos, like most of country in Southeast Asia, has three season. Dry and hot season starts in late February to early June which temperatures in the Mekong Valley can raise to more then 38° C (100° F), especially in March and April. It follows by the monsoon or the rainy season which starts in June-July and last until November. During this season, the weather is hot, sticky and rainy as you expect it. Temperature can range any where from 25° C (77° F) in the mountain valleys to 38° C (100° F) in the lowland.

The best time to visit Laos is after the monsoon or cool season which starts in November and last until mid-February, during which temperature in the lowland can drop to 15° C (59° F) or below. Cool breezes make your trip more pleasant, while nice and warm temperature during the day provides best time to travel on the road. March to late May also provides best time for soft adventure tours. The rivers are at its lowest peak, clean and clear provides a great enjoyment in the water. Nevertheless, Laos can be visited throughout the year.

If you visit Laos from November to mid-February, we recommend you to bring a long a light jacket especially if you visit the northern part of the country or in the high altitude. For the remaining of the year, a light clothes will fit fine or something that you comfortable in the hot and humid season. Sandals or shoes that can be easily take off will be good as shoes must always be taken off before entering a temple or a Lao house. Just for women, we do recommend that women should avoid clothing that bares the thighs, shoulders or breasts; long trousers, walking shorts and skirts are acceptable, while tank tops, short skirts or running shorts are not. Both men and women should dress conservatively, especially when visiting a temple or government office.
