Laos has a total land area of 236,800 km2 and most of the landscapes are mountains and forests. The major river is the Mekong River which flows through 1865 km of Laos' territory and formed the major portion of borders with Thailand or about 1,500 km. Total population of Laos is about 5,433,000 and the population density is about 23 people per km2, comprised with more than 47 main ethnic groups such as: the Hmong, Khrmu, Yao, Akha, Ikor, Leu, and etc. These ethic groups still retain their own distinctive customs, dialects, and traditions. In fact, Laos's population is classified into three main groups:

- Lao Lum "Lao lowland that lives mostly in the plain next to the Mekong River and its subsidiaries."

- Lao Theung "Lao upland that lives mostly in the plateau."

- Lao Soung "Lao highland that lives generally on the top of the mountians.
